Having worked in design in several states across Australia, Damien Dickerson’s designs can be seen right across the country. Now working as a Designer at Webb & Brown-Neaves, Damien loves helping Perth families create their dream home.

Damien began his career in Drafting, and slowly transitioned into the more creative role of a Designer. “Whenever an opportunity arose to have some input in the design process I jumped at it. It snowballed from there both with the design opportunities and the desire to be more creative with every new design.”

Damien then worked for a small design studio in the ACT and NSW, focusing on environmental design. “This really opened my eyes to different building methods and materials,” he said. “I learnt a lot about how the materials we chose and the orientation of the spaces within the home can drastically affect how the home feels and looks.”

Design was a perfect fit for Damien. “I’ve always liked creating and making things, experimenting and testing new ideas,” he said. “Once I had a good understanding of construction and building methods through my time in drafting, it was time to get back to creating and making.”

Webb & Brown-Neaves’ in-house Design Team ensures that the building process is smooth for all clients. “Having an in-house Design Team is extremely helpful for our clients,” he said. “I love being able to sit down with clients face-to-face to find out what they are after and go through different ideas on the spot to determine the best solution to suit them and their lifestyle.”

For a Webb & Brown-Neaves Designer, every home design is different, meaning challenges are often presented. But it’s all part of the process, and Damien loves being able to solve problems along the way.

“I love the satisfaction of coming up with a solution after hitting a roadblock in the design process that is better than you could have imagined.”

For Damien, something he loves about his role is seeing his designs come to life. “I love being able to create something from scratch and seeing your creation become a reality,” he said. “The best thing about being a Designer is, presenting to a client which absolutely hits the mark and seeing them fall in love with the design.”

Something else Damien loves about working for Webb & Brown-Neaves is his team. “I love the people I work with and the type of work I am given,” he said.

“I have never worked in a place with so much collaboration, which ultimately leads to better design and better outcomes for our clients.”

One design that has resonated with Damien is one of his first designs at Webb & Brown-Neaves. “The client brief was to create something modern that stood out in the street but not in a way that was over the top,” he said. “The home is essentially split into two separate parts by a central gallery and courtyard.”

“The design came together quite quickly with only minor tweaks along the way. The home is currently under construction and I can’t wait to see the final product.”

Damien’s tips for your next home design:

1. Try and have a clear idea of the accommodations you would like in the home as well as the styles that appeal to you. Once you have that information, break down your home ideas into ‘must-haves’ and ‘would-like-to-haves.’ This will help during the design process to keep you on track with your budget. 2. Be open minded. Often the designer will come up with ideas and proposals that may challenge what you have in mind and that may provide a better outcome to suit your needs.
